Indoors as well as all the usual Christmas fun the children have been using there fine and gross motor skills to wrap presents, cut up collage materials for their Christmas arts and crafts as well as using some sewing skills to make puppets. They have being using Christmas number lines to support numeracy development such as number recognition, before and after and counting to 20. Children like to get messy so what better way to perfect your mark making and writing skills than drawing in shaving foam. This is a good way to get children who don’t like to draw to practice these skills. You can also do this using flour when you are baking together, with soap on the mirror/tiles at bath time (a bit messy but lots of fun) or even in the mud with a stick when you are on your walk.
We have been developing our knowledge of science and engineering through experiments and exploration of resources. We focused on scents and learning to identify and recognise different smells including lemon, cinnamon and strawberry. The children have been expanding their imagination through creative re-enacting of the story. They expanded their learning of literacy through-out the room with puppets, story sequencing, lost and wanted posters and acting out the story in the garden. Learning to work together through games and puzzles has been a focus this month, encouraging co-operation, sharing with our friends.
The children have been excited to take part in various science experiments, we learnt about different forces and how they affect our everyday lives. Some of the boys and girls were telling us all about Halloween, they were very disappointed that they couldn’t trick or treat this year because of the virus, but we celebrated Halloween all week in nursery. We were learning about pumpkins and making jack-o-lanterns, we also took part in lots of arts and crafts making ghosts, pumpkins, bats and the children wanted to make witches hats too. Some of our books have been all about knights, castles and princesses so the boys and girls wanted to make crowns and learn more about who lives in a castle. We made our castle with junk modelling, learning about recycling and reusing within our everyday play.
The children have been learning about emotions and have been engaged with the colour monster book. The children made their own monster emotion puppets with the colours of how they were feeling. They had been learning about ways of managing feeling's and who can support them at different times. The children made their own feeling's jars like in the story. We also made up our own colour monster game outside and the children have been role playing the story. The children have also learning about autumn and collected leaves from the school garden, they made nature faces and painted with the leaves. The children have been discussing the change in weather and have been helped brush up the leaves.
The staff in the banana pod in the 3-5 room have been working on promoting independence and good hygiene throughout the day. The children have been settling in for the past weeks and have settled well back into the room and smaller pods. The staff have been using the SMART board to do number and colour activities. They also have been using the board to do virtual stories and some yoga. The children have been making their own pasta dishes with the girls developing their fine motor skills, learning how to use knifes appropriately as they cut the ingredients up.
